SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2024, 7pm AT ST ANDREW'S CHURCH, WICKHAMPTON, NORFOLK

TALK BY MEDIEVAL HISTORIAN IMOGEN CORRIGAN M.Phil, FRSA

"The signs of the times: how to read medieval art".

Our ancestors left so many signs and symbols in their art - some easier to decipher than others.  This lecture considers art which ranges from formal sculpture and rough graffiti to wood carving, roof bosses, wall paintings and glass of the period C1100-C1500. It will guide us through where such images mights be found and the forms they might take, as well as what they meant to the medieval viewer. It will answer some basic questions such as why are fonts usually octagonal?; why are cockerels so often used as church weather vanes?; and is a hedgehog a good or bad figure in medieval art?  It considers body language, and how to spot saints. There is also analysis of some manuscript illustrations and a dissecting of one or two famous images.

The church cafe will be open for light refreshments.

Tickets: £5 each (cash please).
